An Avaricious Female Director

                                                     An Avaricious Female Director

Since the multinational companies stepped their feet into India and its metro cities, the boom for the software education had reached its peak. Computer science graduates were dreaming to get into these newly established MNC’s. Two things were essential to get into these MNC’s: software knowledge and English communication skills. To produce the skilled professionals, many software coaching institutes had been set up to cater to the needs of the aspirants who were looking for the jobs in MNC’s.  Ameerpet was unknown to many till the inception of software institutes, afterwards it had become world famous for providing coaching for all kinds of software programs. Along with many software institutes, a few English speaking institutes had been established.

English Hub was one among them which had offered training for English speaking and interview skills. Unlike, the other institutes, this institute was being run by an egoistic female director whose only ambition in life was to make more money at any cost, even at the expense of injustice to the students. Her name was Ujwala and nobody knew whether it was real or not. She was the only female director among the hundreds of male directors. Greed and Arrogance were her second natures. Greed for money and arrogance about herself had made her stand in front of these male chauvinistic directors.

Nepal was her birth place. Soon after her birth, her family was immigrated into India in search of livelihood. Her father had been a goorka(a night watchman) and mother a servant maid who would work in many houses, cleaning utensils and clothes. Ujwala was educated in different parts of India and finished graduation in Hyderabad. She was always average in studies except Math because numbers attracted her more which in turn linked with money. The bigger the number, the happier she felt. Whenever she looked at the biggest number, she would imagine earning and possessing that much of money. She had a younger brother named Muthsohi, who was six years younger than she and who looked like a true Nepali.

Since childhood, Ujwala had been extremely avaricious, wanted to rule wherever she went and wanted to dominate whomever she met. She was the modern form of Cleopatra only in character not in beauty. Her body was feminine and her mind was masculine in nature. Everyman was repelled by her beauty like the same poles of the magnet. She was fair with pumpkin like fat and chubby face which lacked beauty and attraction. Make up was never needed and she disliked applying make- up. If by any chance, she had applied make-up, she would have looked like a junior artist in tamil movies. Her loose short hair tied with some weird colored band which would dangle on her back between the shoulder blades like the bull’s tail between the legs. Jealousy was the only female trait visible in her personality. She would feel envy towards others when her business was not doing well and when it was doing well she would display arrogance.

Money was the only thought which ran in her mind all day and night and she would do anything to get that. She had started her career as a counselor for a reputed English training institute, working effectively and clamorously, learnt the ins and outs of the trade. What captivated her was not the counseling part but the money counting and collecting part. In fact, she was adept at collecting balance money from the students like an everyday financier. Her counseling was like shouting as though she were arguing and fighting. She had never spoken softly and politely. Harshness and impoliteness would never amiss in her speech. ‘Right’ was her catch word and during the counseling she would use it often authoritatively (agree with me else I might kick your ass) and on the other hand, the innocent student would acknowledge her saying her yes or nodding his head as he had no alternative like a rat facing the lecture of the cat and asking for acknowledgement from the rat.

With the rancor in her heart against the director of the English institute and the greed in her mind to earn money, she quit the job as a counselor. Moreover, she had become sick of earning money for someone else and now she had become the director herself for minting the money. Exactly beside the previous Institute, she had started her own Institute called English Hub, a Spoken English Institute.

“We make you speak English” was the motto of the institute and she reiterated it many times during the counseling with the students and it was never made possible in reality. Rather they made her speak, she had learnt English more by speaking with the students and students learnt almost nothing. Her English was like jabing the needles into human body with only high pitch modulation, full of mispronunciation, mother tongue influence, ungrammatical but fluent. If an Englishman listened to her speech, he would definitely commit suicide for her intolerable and imperfect English. She had fans too for her English. Some students also felt that the director was speaking English well and took admission without a demo class. Seven out of ten students who walked into the counseling would join the institute through her vociferous counseling and leave the institute dissatisfied learning nothing even after the course.

In her Institute, she was the one woman army, director, trainer, counselor, office boy etcetera all the roles played by her. She did play all these roles not because she was a versatile but because she was a miser and she just intended to save money. If necessary, she would clean the floor and washroom all by herself. She had no emotions only ambition to earn money. None had seen her laugh and her smile was plastic which was immediately displayed in the presence of new students and with the old students only her glares and arrogance were displayed.

She spoke sweet words and made unreal promises before the admissions. Once the money was fallen into her hands, she would show her egoistic attitude to the students. Within two or three days of joining, students would realize that all her words and promises were fake and futile. The bold would fight for the justice and she never yielded to them especially fee refundable was impossible in her institute. The person who took the fee refund from her would rule the world and convince anyone. The timid would submissively sneak in and out of the class and attend the classes till the end of the duration or till the end of their patience. No student had ever come out like an English speaker from her institute. In English hub, students’ English had been deteriorated rather than improved, they became more doubtful about English rather than clear, English had become an unreachable moon and impossible goal for them.
